3Alternate versions of classic Haggard!  Aug 21, 2003 By Cave Eyes "Cave Eyes"
At first glance, this compilation may appear to be just another collection of the same old songs that have been released and re-released hundreds of times before. But this Laserlight CD is actually much better than that; The songs all sound like alternate takes of Merle's early hits, possibly recorded during the same sessions that produced the "official" album versions (although I can't say for sure--sadly, the booklet contains no information at all). So, if you're a fan and think you've heard these songs before, think again. Some of these versions are as good as the original album cuts, and they're much better than present-day Merle covering his old hits.

1much better compilations available  Nov 04, 2002 By D. Newton
to get a good quality, single-disc collection of the original recordings of some of Merle Haggard's greatest music, "20 Greatest Hits" on the Capitol/EMI label is good, as is the budget cd "Best of the Best" also on Capitol (avoid similarly titled releases on different labels)...to really do Merle Haggard's legacy justice, easily the best single purchase currently available is the multi-label box set compilation called "Down Every Road"

5The Little CD That Could  Dec 06, 2006 By Scott A. Grossman "ScottyG"
I notice a couple folks have panned this little collection of classic Merle tunes because it didn't have enough of this or that. I felt compelled to defend this little CD that could. It's become an old fav, though I once considered it a twangy, hokey mess.

I got it around the time when Britney was exploding onto the scene and I thought it would be silly and fun to buy Merle's Oakie From Musogee in protest. It was. But I found the other tunes on the CD were so... country. Yuck!

But Mama Tried is soooo good and Branded Man is a cool tune and the Workin Man Blues... nine kids and a wife?? Classic! So slowly I began to go deeper and deeper into this recording, always playing Oakie but sampling the rest and before I knew it I'm a huge Merle fan. Saw him in Vegas this year... he was great. He chided the hippies (who were all there to see Dylan) by threating to play Oakie. It was so rad to see all their faces drop when he went into the opening lick and said... just kidding, HA

Anyway, Mele is the man. This CD rocks, though there may be better collections out there for more money, I'd recommend this little CD if you want a good hard dose of cheap Merle.
