As a singer who has parlayed boyish charm and modest talent into a multiplatinum career, Tim McGraw seems like the guy next door who got incredibly lucky--and not just with his marriage to Faith Hill. This easy-listening collection features a generous 14 cuts, heavy on power ballads ("You Get Used to Somebody," "Take Me Away from Here," "Why We Said Goodbye") with soaring choruses and frothy sentiments, but light on soulful substance. For variety, McGraw proves a dead-on Springsteen mimic with "Forget About You," dubiously links himself to Hank Williams and Elvis with "Things Change," and crosses over toward Ricky Martin territory on the Spanish-tinged "Let Me Love You." Hill joins hubby on background vocals for the comparatively subtle "Angry All the Time." --Don McLeese

5The Circus is just getting started  Apr 24, 2001 By Shane
Multi-platinum country superstar Tim McGraw returns with his latest Curb Records release "Set This Circus Down." "Grown Men Don't Cry" continues to climb up the chart. It examines a man's perspective of different situations that make him cry because of both sadness and happiness. "Things Change" is an advocate for country music in that it says it doesn't matter what today's country sounds like when compared to that of the past because it's just good music and it's changed. Faith Hill assists her husband with background vocals on "Angry All The Time", which is a pleasant departure from their normal sappy ballads. "Angel Boy" is about a boy who goes astray and wonders if he can be forgiven. That song has some good guitar work. "Let Me Love You" is a Spanish-influenced song in the style of Ricky Martin about a man who wants the opportunity to show a woman what he has to offer. "Set This Circus Down", the title track, is simply about settling down. All in all, Tim McGraw does another fabulous job of selecting songs people can relate to. For those who love lyrics, they are included in the booklet. "Set This Circus Down" is Tim McGraw's best album to date.

5Buy a ticket for this circus!  Apr 26, 2001
As a loyal Tim McGraw fan I ran out and bought the CD and I love it! I have listened to it several times and I am moved by this collection of songs. "Grown Men Don't Cry", "Angry All the Time" and "Why we said Goodbye" are examples of strong ballads that show maturity in this artist. Songs such as "Let me Love you" and "Angel Boy" give the album some spice. The song "Things Change" is a great reminder about what music is all about. Thank you for a great follow up to "A Place in the Sun"! A job well done!

5You Can Feel It In Your Soul  May 01, 2001 By November
"Set This Circus Down" is the seventh album released by country star Tim McGraw. Following the release of his Greatest Hits collection in November of 2000, and a wait of nearly 2 years since his last studio album, this disc gives music fans a treat with 14 new cuts from Tim. As on his past albums, Tim is not scared to try new things, backed up by the track "Things Change". The song explores the fact that everything, including music is always changing. At the same time, this album provides more of what his fans have come to expect from Mr. McGraw; great songs and the emotions that Tim packs into each and every one of his songs makes it easy for listeners to relate. There are many stand out tracks on this album. "Let Me Love You", "Telluride", "You Get Used To Somebody", "Why We Said Goodbye" and the current single "Grown Men Don't Cry" are sure to become fan favorites. Wife Faith Hill provides harmonies on the track "Angry All The Time", a song which had everyone raving after the couple's Soul2Soul Tour last year (along with 'Let Me Love You'). If you are a McGraw fan, a country music fan, or a music fan in general, I recommend giving this album a listen. It explores many different songs and many different music styles.

5One of the Best country cd's. WRITTEN BY A NON COUNTRY FAN!  Jan 09, 2005 By Michael G. Fox
My fiancee is a huge fan of Tim Mcgraw's. At night we pick 5 cd's and let them play (in order) When she wanted to add this one, me not being much of a country fan i wasnt too happy, but she gets 2 picks and so do i so what the hey ya know?

The cowboy in me: wasnt a favorite at first. the guitar outro was impressive to me but that was the best part.

Telluride: on the other hand was VERY WONDERFUL! I just bought a 45 for my jukebox with this on the b-side of his new hit live like you were dying. More of a rock song with a southern/country feel than a country song, it is clearly one of the best 2-3 songs on this album!!!!

You Get Used to Somebody: has some of the best lost love lyrics i have ever heard. "I never dreamed when i was letting you go that i would wake up and miss you this much"

Unbroken: is one of the radio singles. It is a great song with alot of pep to it. One of the almost best songs on the album (not part of the best 3 i referred to in Telluride but darn close!)

Things change: i didnt like at first but after seeing him perform it live i gained a better appreciation for the song. Truer words havent ever been spoken. In music things change all the time!

angel boy: One of those 3 best tunes. A country song with a rocking edge to it. KICK BUTT guitar solo to end the song!!!!

Forget about us: He might not write his songs, but this actually makes his songs better. Think about this, Tim didn't write this lost love song, but he sounds like he truly believes EVERY word like he is CURRENTLY living the pain and sorrow. He also sounds like he is going to cry his eyes out while singing it. Being so in love and having no problems with Faith Hill, makes me wonder how he does it. But he can, that makes me respect him as a performer. The only bad part of the song is wherer he whistles at the end. I just think it sounds hokey.

Take me away from here: Another great song, nice guitar solo in the song too!

Smilin': Good beat to this one. Not alot to say other than that.

Set This Circus Down: Hands down the worst song on the album. It isnt a total loss, i just think it isnt a good song vocals wise.

Angry All the Time: Another of the "Hit" singles. I have mixed thoughts on this song but it is on the good side of things in the end.

Let Me Love You: Just when i thought the album had nose dived, this song kicks my butt back into happy mode. Some lively vocals and nice instrumental passages.

Grown Men Don't Cry: The other bad song. Some really stupid lyrics. "So i got into my suburban and i drove away" Real dumb.

Why We Said Goodbye: Another that makes me realize he is a talented, believable musician/singer. A lost love song that makes me think his marriage had ended and he was living it.

Even if you don't like country, there is enough rock influence on this cd to overlook the country elements. Think The Eagles or maybe Lynyrd Skynyrd, but the rockier selections by those artists(Life In The Fast Lane, In The City by the Eagles are specific examples.)

5He's back!  Apr 28, 2001 By DanD
There's no doubt that Tim McGraw is the best in the business. Now he has a new CD out, and it proves to be his best yet. Sure, this CD has quite a few ballads, but is that necessarily a bad thing? "Telluride" is a powerful song, and you get swept away in the lyrics. The same goes for "Unbroken" and "Set This Circus Down." If you don't already know about "Things Change", it's about time you came out of your cave! "Grown Men Don't Cry" is a little lacking in the chorus area, but is still a wonderful song. "Forget About Us" is simply an easy-listening tune, so sit back and relax. "Smilin'" looks at the world through happy eyes--maybe someone who's found a first love? "Angry All The Time" features Faith Hill on excellent harmony vocals. "Let Me Love You" has a wonderful Spanish feel to it, making it my personal favorite. And then there's the last song. I don't cry much. Hardly at all, in fact. But when I first heard "Why We Said Goodbye", I'll admit that I shead a tear. And that's a difficult thing for a guy to say! Altogether, McGraw has come out with a brand new album, featuring some of the best songs he's recorded yet. Keep it up, man!
