Merle High on the Stool Jul 22, 2001
By Michael S. Mahoney This album from the sixties finds Merle hitting his stride. The arrangements are straight ahead country, pure Bakersfield, without all the frills, fakery, and stomach churning pop veneer that keeps gushing out of today's Nashville. The title tracks don't sound any better anywhere, and the overlooked "The Longer You Wait" just further proves Merle's songwriting supremacy. Populism has few finer proponents than the Hag. Put this disc on and let your own inner hayseed grin in validation.
Merle Haggard's Masterpiece... Jul 03, 2008
By R. Webb
"minstrel man"
"Swinging Doors/The Bottle Let Me Down", these two great songs highlight this third album for "the hag" recorded in 1966, his best overall early Capitol album introducing the sweet country sound of Bakersfield that we all know, - featuring the chicken pickin' bending strings of Roy Nichols and James Burton. Merle's first Capitol album, Strangers, seemed to lack this sound, a little more on the subdued side, though the melodies were strong with strong lyrics, of course Merle's rich baritone voice is ever present and vital...the barroom classic "Swinging Doors", starts off this album that never stops and keeps on rolling with, "The Bottle Let Me Down", Tommy Collins' "High On The Hilltop", "No More You And Me", "Somebody Else You've Known", "Shade Tree Fix-It Man", "If I Could Be Him", these songs may not all be hits, but in today's standards they are, you'll never hear a recording like this nowadays, country music of today is like "a snowball headed for hell". This is Merle Haggard's masterpiece and my personal favorite.

FANTASTIC! I have never enjoyed Haggard until this evening. Jun 21, 1999 mmmmmmmmmmmmm. Merl is wonderful. You can't imagine the thrill I had to be the first to review such a fine piece of art. He deserves an award for this. Every song was like a piece of melting butter running through my ears. WOW! I just wish I had time to listen to them all over and over. Even if you don't like country, Merl is the man for you. You would be a fool not to get this cd.
