5Awesome old-fashioned gospel music  Jul 09, 2001 By Carol C. "ccjello"
If you like upbeat, old-fashioned gospel music (the Speers, the Gaithers, Blackwood Brothers), or if you're a Merle Haggard fan, give this CD a try. On the other hand, if you can't stomach country music, and your preference for Christian music is more smooth and contemporary (along the lines of the Winans and Sandi Patti), full of introspection, you probably won't like this much. This is simple, straight-forward old-timey Jesus-Saves style gospel music.

Merle Haggard's deep, slightly rough-edged voice coupled with Albert E. Brumley, Jr.'s deep, Johnny Cash-ish voice are together a great combo. The songs include many written by Albert Brumley senior; highlights are Victory in Jesus, I'll Meet You in the Morning, and and awesome rendition of Albert Brumley Sr.'s I'll Fly Away. I listen to this CD often --the familiar, perfect-for-singing-along music takes me right back to the Southern Baptist tent revivals of my childhood -- all that was missing was Brother Eddie on stage, leading the flock. For me, this is the musical version of meatloaf & mashed potatoes -- pure comfort food.

4Haggard's Voice Is Beautiful As Always  Jul 01, 2007 By H. F. Corbin "Foster Corbin"
I bought this CD because I wanted to hear somebody sing the Albert Brumley standard "I'll Fly Away" and I love Merle Haggard's voice. As always Haggard delivers although I'm not keen on his version of "I'll Fly Away" as he sings it way too fast for my liking. Teaming up with Albert Brumley, Junior, Haggard includes on this CD three of his own songs, "If You See A Change In Me," "Old Rugged Shoes" and "Someday He'll Whisper My Name." Albert Brumley, Junior wrote "There's A Road Down The Road," "Marching Over Jordan," and "Everybody Knows." In addition to "I'll Fly Away," two other songs are included here by the great Albert Brumley, "I Dreamed I Met Mother & Daddy" and"I'll Meet You In the Morning." "Victory in Jesus," written by E. M. Bartlett, completes the set.

My two favorite selections are two by Albert Brumley, "I Dreamed I Met Mother & Daddy," (which I had not previously heard) sentimental but beautiful, and "I'll Meet You In The Morning," a very popular Brumley song in country churches of yesteryear. Accompanied by a mean gospel piano, Mr. Haggard plays with the timing and makes this song his own. It is by far the best selection on this CD.

Haggard sings solo on most of the verses of all the songs and is joined by Albert Brumley, Junior on the choruses; but his voice is so strong and powerful that he overpowers Brumley. The singing is best when this duo is joined by Bonnie Owen, Haggard's wife, singing back-up.

Even though Mr. Haggard is no longer a young man, he still is one of the best country singers around. It's worth buying the CD to hear his version of "I'll Meet You In The Morning."
